Pool season will be here before you know it, and when it arrives, you’ll need your equipment to be ready. Well-working pool equipment not only makes your pool fun to swim in, but it also ensures safety. Here’s a list of some pool equipment and how to take care of it.
The Pool Pump
The pump keeps the water circulating around your pool, so it’s imperative to keep it in good working order. As with any other piece of equipment dependent on electrical power, turn it off at the circuit box before working on it. Then take off the lid, clean out the strainer basket, and make sure the impeller is clear. Inspect the O-ring. If it’s warped or cracked, replace it. Lubricate the new ring or the old one if it’s in good shape, then put it back. After this, hose down the pump’s housing, put the pump back together, and clear away any debris from around it. Flush the pump with fresh water, turn it on, and observe it for a while to make sure it’s running well.
Clean the Filters
Swimming pools use three types of filters. These are sand, DE, diatomaceous earth filters or cartridge filters. Sand and DE filters should be backwashed every couple of months. Add DE powder to the DE filter after it’s backwashed, though you only need to replace sand every three to five years. All you need to do with a cartridge filter is rinse it out with a garden hose. Cartridges should be replaced every one or two years.
Check the Pool Liner
The pool liner is nearly as important as the pump, as it waterproofs the shell of the pool. A damaged pool liner can cause leaks that can be very expensive to repair. If a leak is allowed to persist, it might even destroy your pool. Before the pool season begins, look for any tears, wrinkled spots or spots whose color has faded. Have a pool contractor come out and diagnose them as soon as you can.
Other ways to preserve the pool liner are to make sure the water chemistry is balanced and to avoid harsh cleaners and cleaning tools that can cause tears or punctures.
Pool Heater Maintenance
Your pool heater should also be checked at least once a year. Look for any damage or corrosion, remove any debris, and leave the space around the heater clear. Make sure that it vents properly if it’s powered by gas, and see that the burners are clear. If you’re a little nervous about handling your pool heater or any other piece of equipment, call in a professional.
