Waking Up the Water: A Beginner’s Guide to Opening Your Pool

pool with spa

Standing next to a covered pool in early spring, you can usually smell stale water before you see it. The cover sags in the middle, leaves are stuck in shallow puddles, and the straps feel stiff from months of tension. Opening a pool feels intimidating at first, but once you move through it step by step, the process makes sense.

Removing the Cover and Cleaning the Debris

Before anything else, we deal with what’s sitting on top of the cover. Pooled water adds weight fast, and you can feel that strain when the cover doesn’t flex as it should. A small submersible pump clears that water without stressing the material. Once the surface dries, leaves and grit sweep off easier with a soft broom.

Trying to drag a heavy cover off usually ends with torn seams. After removal, we rinse it, scrub off the residue, and let it dry fully before storage. A damp cover folded away often smells musty by next season.

Waking Up the Filtration System

When we open the equipment pad, the first thing we check is what’s missing. Winterizing means drain plugs come out, and they need to go back in before anything powers up. We clear baskets, feel inside for debris, and fill the pump basket with water to help it prime.
When the system starts, the sound tells us a lot. A steady hum and visible circulation mean things are moving correctly. Grinding, rattling, or air bubbles lingering in the lines signal something still needs attention.

Balancing the Chemistry for Safe Swimming

Clear water can still be off balance. We’ve tested plenty of pools that looked fine but showed low sanitizer or drifting pH. Without balance, bacteria grow quietly. Testing early helps avoid that.

Sometimes the water looks cloudy or greenish at first. That doesn’t mean the equipment failed. Filters working continuously and proper chemicals usually bring clarity back within a few days. Watching pressure gauges helps track that progress.

Perform Safety Checks

Before anyone steps in, we check the parts people rely on. Ladders should feel solid without wobbles. Handrails need tight anchors, not rusted bolts. We also inspect covers, gates, and alarms for smooth operation.

Loose hardware or corrosion often shows where water sat all winter. Addressing those spots early keeps small issues from turning into bigger repairs later.

Scheduling Professional Inspection and Maintenance

Even when everything seems right, a professional inspection adds peace of mind. We look at flow rates, electrical connections, and water balance together. That full picture helps confirm the pool is ready for regular use.
